Volunteer Spotlight: Meet the Gulf 4 FEMA Corps Team
Potomac Conservancy was thrilled to have Nico, Sebastian, Aziza, Vanessa and Mac join us at the February 22nd Canal Stewards cleanup event. The team dedicated their Saturday morning to removing litter and debris along the shores of the Potomac at Fletcher's Cove in Washington, DC.
Nico, Sebastian, Aziza, Vanessa and Mac are members of AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) FEMA Corps: Southern Region, Gulf 4. Team members from this FEMA Corps group are assigned service projects in and around Jessup, Maryland.
Let’s see what the team had to say:
Q: What’s your favorite activity to do on or near the Potomac?
Nico: Kayaking or canoeing.
Vanessa: Yeah, kayaking.
Aziza: Paddle boarding, we actually saw some out.
Vanessa: And fishing!
Q: Why do you think it’s important to keep not only the Potomac, but all river systems clean?
Sebastian: It’s just really important because it affects the whole ecosystem and affects everyone’s experience. It’s extremely important.
Aziza: Yeah, water sustains all life forms, and without a healthy supply of water, nothing would be able to flourish.
Q: Did you find or see anything interesting while picking up trash today?
Vanessa: I found an arrow!
Aziza: I hung out with a family of deer for a while.
Q: What would you ask the next volunteer we interview?
Mac: How many times did you fall in? Once for me.
Nico: You fell in the river?
Mac: Did you think I wouldn’t?
