Earth Day Resolution

Make a 2014 Earth Day Resolution: Take an action for clean water this year!

Sometimes it can feel like the world’s problems are too big for any one person or community to handle. But did you know that water quality is largely dependent on local actions?

Rivers and creeks grow wider as they consume water that flows off the lands surrounding their banks. Unfortunately, water is not the only thing seeping into our streams.

Deforestation, litter, fertilizers, stormwater runoff and other harmful land use practices contribute significant levels of pollution to local waters and the Potomac – the source of drinking water for nearly 90 percent of the greater Washington, DC  area.

That’s why it’s important that we, together, make a pledge to stand up, speak up and do something to ensure our waterways are protected from known sources of pollution.

What can you do?

Taking an action for clean water is easier than you think:

Action Spotlight: Get Your Hands Dirty for Clean Water

Join a growing movement of clean water champions and volunteer for a local cleanup. When you get dirty for clean water, you’re lending a hand to:

  • Beautify shorelines and protect important habitat by removing litter, debris and bulk trash items from the shores of the Potomac
  • Save streamside trees by removing English Ivy, an invasive and fast-growing vine that grows chokes out and kills trees by stealing their sunlight
  • Promote outdoor recreation and enjoyment of the Potomac by maintaining trails and water access paths
  • Have fun and discover new favorite spots along the Potomac, witness wildlife up close, and experience an urban wilderness just miles from the White House like never before.

If you’re interested in an upcoming event, please contact Rebecca Long at long@potomac.org to register.
