One of the greatest public health assets we have is our local access to clean water. Neuroscientists and psychologists alike have confirmed that wild waterways provide a fountain of happiness, peace, and well-being.

But what good does this do you if you’re stuck at home?

According to the David Suzuki Foundation, just looking pictures of nature can trigger a decrease in stress. That’s why we’ve assembled six quick hits of the most relaxing sights, sounds, and stories our river has to offer. Whether you want to close your eyes and drift off to a chorus of spring peepers, or lose yourself in a West Virginian paddling adventure, we’ve got your next mental break covered.

1. Good Vibrations: The mating call of the American Toad (36 sec)

Can you sit still longer than this toad searching for a mate?

2. Escape to the warm waters of Harpers Ferry
(12 min, 27 sec)

Missing paddling excursions to the river with friends? Lose yourself in this sunny video of white water surfing (and some wipeouts) underneath the historic town of Harpers Ferry.

3. Beaver crossing (49 sec)

Did you know that beavers are really good for clean water? Take a moment of appreciation and follow this hard-to-spot critter as it swims across our river.

4. How Wolves Change Rivers (4 min, 34 sec)

A classic story of the interconnectedness and delicate balance of nature and all living things.

This video is recommended by our friends at the Center for Spirituality in Nature, which has lots of great resources for connecting with the natural world and tips on meditating outside!

5. Soar over Virginia’s lush lands and wild waters
(2 min, 53 sec)

There’s no narration in this video, just imagine you’re your favorite local bird and fly above the sun filled landscape of verdant Virginia.

6. Busy bees (46 sec)

What’s better than watching others work hard while you’re relaxing? Though we are a bit jealous that a bees workspace is on beautiful wildflowers!
