6 Ways to Get Outside for Great Outdoors Month!

Put off household chores and get outside. June is national Great Outdoors Month! 

Lucky for us the Potomac River is the perfect setting for any number of outdoor activities — from hiking to kayaking to camping.

So put off that to-do list, grab some sunscreen, and get outside! 

1. Celebrate the Potomac with the Accokeek Foundation (June 13)

Join the Accokeek Foundation for Celebrating the Potomac, a family-friendly day of music, food, and activities highlighting the cultural and environmental importance of our nation’s river.

2. Find Your Park at Great Falls (June 13) 

Great Falls Park invites you to Find Your Park! "Find Your Park" is a public awareness and education campaign aimed at connecting and reconnecting Americans to their heritage and public lands. The event is family friendly and will include a mix of information sessions, demonstrations, and activities.

3. Learn to Kayak with REI (June 14)

Join REI for a class that will introduce you to the basics of paddling a kayak in a mild setting and at a relaxed pace. Students will learn about kayaks, paddles, gear, and clothing before learning to launch and being introduced to the basic paddle strokes. This class is a great way for those considering kayaking to try it out.

4. Take a Stroll for the Summer Solstice (June 20)

Join the Center for Spirituality in Nature on a casual walk to celebrate the longest day of the year and the beginning of summer. Nature in summer has much to teach about bounty and provision. Come explore what's happening ecologically in summer and what can be learned from it spiritually.

5. Paddle the Potomac (June 25)

Tired of your typical Thursday evening happy hour? Come mingle, network, exercise, and discover the great outdoors! We are teaming up with our friends at the National Parks Conservation Association and Key Bridge Boathouse in Georgetown to put on this alternative happy hour, an evening of free food and twilight paddling.

6.  Break In a New Hiking Trail (June 27)

Be among the first to visit Sugarloaf Regional Trails’ new Native American Trail along the C&O Canal towpath. The Piscataway Conoy tribe will be present for the trail dedication and will perform traditional dances and talk about their heritage.
