From our president
For more than three decades, Potomac Conservancy has partnered with the community to restore the Potomac River and its more than 14,000 square miles of wild streams and forests. Our treasured river has taught us many lessons over the years. One of the most important: its recovery is something we must continually defend.
This year alone, our river has endured unprecedented sewage contamination, extreme drought, large fish kills, rapid deforestation, and unchecked data center sprawl. From one crisis to another this mounting pressure has pushed American Rivers to designate the Potomac the “Most Endangered River.”
This reality should cause us all to pause and reflect. The river upon which our nation was founded, the river that provides over 5 million people with drinking water, the river that fuels our local economy – is now the most vulnerable waterway in the country.
We cannot keep stacking stress on the Potomac and expect it to thrive.
Potomac Conservancy is meeting this moment with determination. Through our community-powered conservation and advocacy efforts, we are:
Together, we are proving that local action creates lasting change. Every forest protected, every mile of stream restored, every volunteer inspired, and every voice raised for clean water strengthens the Potomac’s resilience.
Thank you for standing with us and for helping ensure that one day the Potomac is swimmable and fishable for everyone.
With gratitude,
President, Potomac Conservancy
Rebuilding Trust
When the Potomac Interceptor collapsed and sent over 240 million gallons of sewage into the Potomac River this winter, we became one of the first voices demanding accountability. In the wake of an unprecedented six-week ban on recreation and fish harvesting, over 2,100 residents and organizations joined us in calling on DC Water for answers and actions.
Potomac Conservancy is keeping up the pressure. We’re leading CLEAR Potomac, a new coalition of partners addressing the spill’s long-term impacts on public safety and water quality. Together, we’re committed to ensuring this disaster never happens again. We won’t stop fighting until our water infrastructure is secure, impacted communities have the help they need, and public confidence is restored in the Potomac River.
Impact at a glance
Protect
The lands we steward connect us to our river, our communities, and our roots. Working alongside National Parks Conservation Association, we supported the Piscataway Conoy’s Land Rematriation efforts to unite their tribe with their ancestral lands. This year, Potomac Conservancy donated two of our islands to their land trust. As the first caretakers of the Potomac River, Indigenous stewardship is fundamental to returning healthy water and thriving habitat to the region.

Defend
Healthy forests clean our streams by keeping waters cool and filtering polluted runoff. That’s why we advocate for state and local policies that combat rapid deforestation and reckless data center expansion. We’ll continue fighting for clean and healthy communities!

Plastic litter is an eyesore while out in nature and it contributes to polluted runoff, the only growing type of pollution in the Potomac River. This year, we mobilized 1,675 volunteers who removed 31,512 pounds of trash from our local shorelines and parks. Through our volunteer-led cleanups, Scoop ‘n Paddles and annual service days, we’re all getting our hands dirty for clean water!
