We get it. Shorter days and shockingly cooler temps can make even the bravest nature lovers think twice before stepping outside in the winter. But don’t let cold weather keep you from enjoying the Potomac River!

The stark landscapes, wide open views, and wintering wildlife transform the Potomac River region into a magical wonderland that you won’t want to miss. Potomac Conservancy has you covered with our staff’s top picks for winter gear, nature walks, and playlists.

Staff Picks: Winter Gear

Our team’s top gear recommendations to keep you out along the Potomac River this winter:

  1. Capilene Long Johns. The synthetic, non-itchy fabric keeps you warm during an early morning walk or windy hike during the day.

  2. Rechargeable hand warmer. Pocket-sized and quick warming, these are perfect for any outdoor adventure.

  3. Hardy gloves. Made of recycled polyester are great for any kind of winter recreation.

  4. Traction straps. Hook them on many types of footwear to prevent icy slips. Even better, you’ll help reduce the need for rock salt.

  5. Cushioned socks. Provide your feet with insulation and comfort while walking or hiking.

Staff Picks: Winter Hikes

Great Falls in Virginia IN the winter

Check out the Billy Goat Trail in Potomac, Maryland or the Mount Vernon Trail, which parallels the parkway between Theodore Roosevelt Island in Washington, D.C. and Mount Vernon in Virginia. Both trails offer unique views and experiences. Even better, foot traffic during the months of January and February slow, giving you ample opportunity to explore these areas at your own pace.

Birdwatching is one of the more popular activities along the Potomac River. Our region attracts a variety of species even in the winter. The Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve or Great Falls Park are excellent spots to find barred owls and red-tailed hawks.

Staff Picks: Songs for Your Winter Playlist

While we love the sounds of wildlife and rolling waters, walks are also the perfect time to listen to music. The right song can motivate you to stay out longer or lose yourself in reflection. These 5 songs have our staff humming:

SNOWY PATH IN West Potomac Park

  1. Modest Mouse: “Float On”

  2. Taylor Swift: “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)”

  3. Norah Jones: “Wintertime”

  4. Billie Holiday: “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm”

  5. Bill Withers: “Lovely Day”

If you’re looking to jam out to river-inspired tunes, check out Potomac Conservancy’s curated “Take Me to the River” playlist on Spotify.

Staff Picks: Winter Volunteering

It may seem counterintuitive, but our most popular river cleanup event is held in January. That’s right. Folks from all walks of life come out for our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event. With warm cheer and cozy gloves, volunteers step up to remove litter along the Potomac River.
