Migration isn’t just for the birds! Hundreds of species of fish call the Potomac River and its tributaries home - but some keep a second home elsewhere.

Some of our favorite native fish spend part of the year or part of their lives away from our waters. But this doesn’t make the Potomac, and its health, any less important to them. Migratory fish not only directly connect our ecosystem with the open ocean, but depend on the Potomac for vital parts of their life cycle. Why else would they swim hundreds of miles back here to give birth?

Test your knowledge of these busy swimmers with our quiz all about fish on the move. Then head to the river to welcome these intrepid travelers home!
