While cherry blossoms feel like a natural sign of spring, these trees are not native to the area and yet have become iconic over time as a shared symbol of the season across the Potomac River region. Peak bloom timing gets more unpredictable each year. This is another way the climate crisis is affecting our region.

Tidal Basin (Washington, DC)

This wouldn’t be a cherry blossom list without one of the most iconic spots in the region, the Tidal Basin. It is a classic destination for peak bloom viewing. Bloom timing is tracked by the National Park Service, making it easier to plan your visit at just the right time.
With monuments, waterfront paths, and plenty of nearby activities, it is an easy and memorable spring outing. We recommend going early and bringing your walking shoes!

Old Town Alexandria Waterfront (Alexandria, VA)

The Old Town Alexandria Waterfront offers a scenic stretch along the Potomac where blooming trees line the river and nearby historic streets. Boat tours are available from the waterfront, and it is easy to pair cherry blossom viewing with a walk to local shops and restaurants throughout Old Town, like Hypergoat Coffee Roasters and Patagonia.

Berkeley Springs State Park (Berkeley Springs, WV)

Berkeley Springs State Park is a great small town spot to catch cherry blossoms in the Potomac River region. You can find spring blooms around the park’s open green spaces and along the nearby streets, making it an easy and relaxing place to take a walk and enjoy the season.
After checking out the blossoms, you can explore the historic bathhouse area, relax by the natural spring, or head into the surrounding downtown to browse local shops, galleries, and restaurants.

River Farm (Alexandria, VA)

River Farm is a calmer spot with more space to roam along the Potomac. It’s home to the American Horticultural Society headquarters and is located on land that was once part of George Washington’s property.
After enjoying the cherry blossoms, visitors can explore the gardens and a wide variety of spring blooms throughout the site. This is a great option for anyone looking to slow down, enjoy open views of the river, and experience spring in a more peaceful setting.

Kenwood neighborhood (Bethesda, MD)

Kenwood offers a quieter, less crowded way to experience cherry blossoms just outside of DC, with more than 1,200 trees lining the neighborhood streets. The blossoms here typically peak three to four days after the Tidal Basin, making it a great follow-up option for the season.
You can make a day of it by having a picnic near the Capital Crescent Trail or grabbing some Cherry Blossom ice cream at Sarah’s Handmade.
Accessible by car, bike, bus, or by taking the Metro Red Line to the Bethesda stop.
